Mexico rises to the occasion
In the era of AI, one nearshore nation stands above the rest for U.S. software development.
AI didn't shrink the need for engineers, it widened it
As of early 2026, a majority of engineers use GitHub Copilot, Cursor and Claude Code every day. Yet AI has expanded the scope of development and increased hiring needs: engineers now spend more time on architecture, security, integration and oversight of AI-generated code.
Global engineer shortage by 2030
The U.S. Labor Department estimates the global shortage of software engineers will reach 85 million by 2030, even as AI tooling becomes ubiquitous.
Median U.S. developer wage
American software engineers are expensive: a median wage of $131,450 ($63.30 per hour, USD), before the time and cost of recruiting them.
Average U.S. engineer tenure
Engineers typically stay about two years, far below the 4.2-year national average, with about 50% leaving within that window. Attrition is much lower in Mexico.

Minimal Geopolitical Risk
One definition of geopolitical risk (GPR) is the probability in one year of a major disruption in trade resulting in the cessation of imports from that country to the U.S. The GPR for Mexico is calculated as 0.4%, the same as Western Europe and much lower than the rest of Latin America and outsourcing destinations elsewhere in the world.
Mexico’s low GPR is due to proximity, a robust trade relationship with the U.S., and membership in the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA).
“Next door,” with the talent depth of a tech powerhouse.
Mexico is the 10th most populous country and 13th largest economy in the world, bound to the United States by geography and deep economic, cultural, and historical ties. It became the top U.S. trading partner in 2025, with bilateral trade reaching nearly $840 billion in 2024.
